MOSQUITO MANAGEMENT (MM)

PEST COVERED :

CCHEMICAL CONTROL MEASURES:

Mosquitoes can be controlled in the following ways

  1. Destruction of larvae (Anti larval treatment)
  2. Destruction of adult mosquitoes (Adulticidal treatment – Spraying & Fogging)

1. Destruction of larvae (Anti larval treatment):-

Spraying of mosquito larvecidal oil /  target specific insecticide on infested stagnant water bodies such as puddle, pith of tyre filled with water, septic tanks, drainages, nalas, collected rain water, etc

2. Destruction of adult mosquitoes (Adulticidal treatment):-

Spraying of residual insecticide will be done on the resting places of mosquitoes such as outer wall of the built up structure (Approximate 2 meter band on the wall & floor from the external perimeter wall & floor junction), surrounding herbs (Bushy vegetation), entry / exit doors, window, exhaust openings etc.

Fogging: The adulticidal treatment can be supplemented with fogging with a suitable chemical during dusk hours when the mosquito/flying insect activity is maximum.

FREQUENCY: The infestation of mosquitoes depends upon the surrounding conditions, the sanitation and hygienic conditions which defer from place to place. Daily / Weekly / Twice, Thrice a week / Fortnightly / Monthly / Daily during monsoon and weekly during non monsoon are the various frequencies that can be proposed depending on the type of premises, the level of infestation, hygienic conditions, level of housekeeping, weather conditions.

Suggestions to clients on Preventive Measures to be taken:

  1. Protect yourself and your family - Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing covering as much of the body as possible (mosquitoes can bite through tight clothes, eg jeans).
  2. Use an insect repellent ointment on uncovered skin (caution: always read and follow the instructions on the label) - avoid using on babies and toddlers!
  3. Make sure all windows and openings of houses, boats, caravans and tents are fitted with fine (1mm) insect screens.
  4. Cover sleep and rest areas with mosquito nets. Try not to go outside when there are lots of mosquitoes around – some mosquitoes will bite during the day, but many are at their biting best for two to three hours around sunrise and sunset.
  5. Mosquito proof your premises.
  6. Mosquitoes breed in standing water - fresh, salty or stagnant. They often breed in puddles and containers rather than ponds, wetlands or rivers.
  7. The most important thing you can do to reduce mosquito numbers in and around your home is check for potential breeding sites on your property and clean them up!
  8. Empty pot plant drip trays at least once a week or fill with sand.
  9. Empty and refill bird baths and pets' drinking water at least once a week.
  10. Clean up and dispose of rubbish; empty them, then cover or put holes in containers that  may hold water, eg tyres, bottles.
  11. Drill holes in tyres used for swings and garden surrounds or empty them at least once a week.
  12. Cover rainwater and septic tank openings, wells or other large water containers with wire mesh no coarser than 1mm.
  13. Stock ornamental ponds with guppy fish to eat any ‘wrigglers’.
  14. Stock dams on your property with native fish and keep the sides clear of plant matter.
  15. Keep roof gutters in good repair and regularly remove leaves and debris so that pools of water do not form.
  16. Keep open drains and channels clear of rubbish, weeds, grass and other debris.
  17. Overturn boats, canoes and dinghies or remove the drain plug so they do not hold water after rain.
  18. Aerosol knockdown or surface insect sprays can help control mosquitoes around the home. Mosquito coils can also provide some protection from mosquitoes. Caution: always read and follow the instructions on the label.

Remark/ Note:
It may be noted that the mosquito can migrate within your premises from any breeding spot within 3-5 Km radius. Hence, the treatments would have limitations in achieving the desire results.
